Essentially, Crown Point is a small Midwestern town with lots of historical significance. One very famous contribution to American history is what happened in Crown Point back in March 1934, when John Dillinger allegedly used a “ gun” he had carved out of wood and painted black with shoe polish to escape from the Lake County Jail, taking the Sheriff’s new Ford V-8 for his get-away. Sheriff Lillian Holley (that’s right, Lake County had a female sheriff way back then) was furious and remained a cult figure in our area until her death in 1994 at the age of 103. Hollywood returned to the scene of the crime in 2008, when Michael Mann chose to film scenes from his movie “Public Enemies” in Crown Point, using the actual Lake County Jail as the film’s setting for the recreation of the infamous Dillinger escape. Johnny Depp played John Dillinger in the movie and actress Lili Taylor had the role of Sheriff Lillian Holley.
Lake County Fair
For ten days every August, Crown Point is home to the Lake County Fair, which is largest county fair in Indiana. There’s a lot of fun for everyone in Crown Point at the Lake County Fair, held near the Grand Old Lady (the Old Courthouse) and its surrounding grounds. There are the usual food and beverage offerings as well as live music along with a carnival, a demolition derby, a monster truck rally and even horse shows.
