US Route 6 moves across the top of Indiana from Illinois to Ohio, beginning as a road that dovetails with the Borman Expressway alongside Interstates 80 and 94, until it enters Lake Station, where it goes its own way at Indiana State Road 51 (Exit 15). It continues along as an independent road until it hits US 33 and then it merges with US 33 for a five mile stretch until traffic reaches Ligonier. There, US33 moves off toward Fort Wayne, and US Route 6 continues on as a 2 lane road serving Indiana onward to the Ohio state line. Nationally, US 6 is a huge roadway, famously known as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway. (On many maps, you will see it referenced as the “GAR” highway.) US Route 6 is a critical part of the American highway system, connecting California (at the town of Bishop) with Massachusetts (Provincetown).
It is the longest continuous highway in the United States. US Route 6 was created by renumbering and aligning other routes and accordingly, it is not considered as efficient a transcontinental roadway as other highways (e.g., U.S. Route 40, one of the first interstate highways which moved traffic east – west between California and New Jersey). US Route 6, for the most part, is a two lane roadway.Travel along US Route 6 in Lake County, for example, and you’ll be able to stop at local diners serving Polish favorites (like Burch’s in Gary), take the kids to the movies at the local theater followed by some fast food favorite, or visit Sunset Hill Park in Valparaiso. History and US Route 6
Historically, US Route 6 is known for honoring Union veterans of the Civil War as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, and in 1953 a movement that begin in the mid-1930s finally saw the highway formally dedicated to these war heroes, after each state’s governor through which U.S. Route 6 meanders provided that state’s written approval of the dedication. Today, a monument officially dedicating U.S. Route 6 stands in front of the Municipal Auditorium in Long Beach, California. US Route 6 is also referenced in the classic novel by Jack Kerouac, On the Road, where the hitchhiking hero ponders traveling along US Route 6 from the East Coast to Nevada but decides to take a different road after he is advised that “there’s no traffic passes through 6.” That advice could be somewhat true today for Northwest Indiana; US Route 6 is not the traffic hub that the Indiana Toll Road provides, for example; nevertheless it is an important part of many Hoosiers’ daily treks here in Northwest Indiana.
