Each year, Attorney Kenneth J. Allen donates $30,000.00 worth of gift cards to the area’s families so that they may go shopping for Christmas presents for their children. The firm works in concert with the Portage and Hammond School system and provides transportation to and from the shopping center. Mr. Allen’s goal is that each child in the area has Christmas presents to unwrap on Christmas morning. As the photos below illustrate, many gifts are purchased to ensure a happy Christmas morning for each family.
Each year, Attorney Kenneth J. Allen purchases 1,200 Thanksgiving dinners for the area’s families to ensure that each family is able to have a warm dinner on Thanksgiving day. The dinners consist of a turkey, potatoes, corn, beans, and a pie. The firm works in concert with the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana to distribute the dinners. “Growing up in Gary and working in the mills and the trades, I’ve seen first-hand the hardship families face when jobs are lost by layoffs or cutbacks as often occurs this time of year. Good people in difficult times deserve help,” said Mr. Allen.
Each year, the United Way Reading Buddies regional literacy program is funded by a $20,000 donation from Attorney Kenneth J. Allen. At the beginning of the school year, more than 3,900 stuffed animal buddies are delivered to first and second grade classrooms in Lake and Porter Counties. The Reading Buddies program is sponsored by Kenneth J. Allen who helps deliver the Buddies to their student recipients, and who reads stories to the classrooms, too, with each student holding his or her new Reading Buddy.
“Reading Buddies is an invaluable program to Porter and Lake County elementary students, and I am proud to be a sponsor again this year. Education and literacy form the basic element of our society, affecting nearly every vocation,” said Attorney Kenneth J. Allen. “It’s a privilege to sponsor the Reading Buddies program.”
The United Way developed the Reading Buddies program to promote reading in elementary school students. In conjunction with classroom instruction, Reading Buddies assist students to improve oral fluency, achieve grade-level reading goals, and build confidence in their reading skills.
